Fuel Subsidies

With fuel prices skyrocketing, GMA is thinking of subsidizing it to ease the call of transport sector for another fare-hike.  While rice subsidies is a good idea, and is being continued by the government through the selling of NFA rice at Php18.75/kilo, I’m not really sure about subsidizing fuel (gasoline and diesel).  Does the government really need to do this?  Can the government really spend that much for this new idea?  As Valerino Sy puts it in his Philequity column in The Philippine Star last Wednesday.

Studies have also shown that most oil subsidies benefit less the people that they were intended for: the poor. Cheap fuel benefits most those who drive the biggest and most inefficient cars, namely the rich. Even targeted subsidies can end up with the wrong hands. Many countries subsidize kerosene, since the poor often cook with it, but so do lots of well-to-do restaurateurs.

In addition, since petroleum products are easy to store and transport, petroleum subsidies also encourage smuggling (to neighboring countries for resale at higher prices) as governments of Iran, Iraq, Venezuela, Nigeria, Kazakhtsan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam can attest.

To make matters worst, artificially low prices encourage waste & traffic congestion and provide disincentives to fuel efficient vehicles. (more…)

PLM, Fires, & Pacman

PLM on Fire

Few minutes ago, I received an e-mail from my boss, who takes great satisfaction listening to news on his AM Receiver, that the PLM (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila) was on fire.  My initial reaction was, ” kakadaan lang namin banda dun kanina ah.. “Doubtful if it was really true, I replied to him and asked him about it.  He replied after a few minutes with these words ” Oo..part lang, dun sa records section.  200K worth of property damage. “

The records section of a city university on fire; I cannot help thinking if it was purposely set on fire to be able to hide something.  Well, I hope not.  Wow!  It’s really amazing how government buildings seem to be the favorite target of fire.  Let’s recall some past incidents:

February 25, 2004

Faulty electrical wiring caused the fire that razed an old building at the PNP Headquarters in Camp Crame. The blaze also partially gutted the supply storage of the Logistics Support Service, causing explosions that shattered glass windows in nearby buildings. PNP were on red alert at that time as the country observed the anniversary of EDSA I.

October 3, 2006

The fourth floor of the National Statistics Office building in Sta. Mesa, Manila caught fire. The floor housed the NCR Statistical Operation Division of NSO.

January 15, 2007

Fire struck the Supreme Court’s new building along Padre Faura, Manila. The fire was confined to the new session hall at the building’s second floor, where the Court holds its oral arguments. Chief Justice Reynato Puno was holding a meeting in a nearby room when the fire broke out.

March 11, 2007

Fire razed the old COMELEC building in Intramuros, Manila. Several documents pertaining to election protests and personnel files were among those destroyed in the fire. After a month, investigators concluded that the incident was accidental, stemming from loose electrical wiring. The fire occurred two months before the May 14, 2007 elections.

July 26, 2007

Fire broke out at the main building of the Court of Appeals in Ermita, Manila. The incident came a day before military officials were ordered to produce Jonas Burgos before the appellate court’s eighth division.

With the exclusion of the January 15, 2007 incident, the rest are highly suspicious occurrences especially the NSO, the Court of Appeals, and the COMELEC.  Don’t be surprised if results of the investigation in the PLM incident will be another ” faulty-wiring case. “  Oh come on!?!

Let’s buy the idea of ” faulty-wiring .”  Oh well, isn’t it the job of Manila City Hall and Manila Fire Department to make sure that government buildings are secured from fire knowing that public documents are there?

Pacman

I hope Pacman wins by TKO against David Diaz in tomorrow’s bout.  If Pacquiao wins this 135-lb fight, he will be the first Asian boxer to win 4 titles in 4 different divisions.  Pacquiao started his career as a 107-lb boxer.  He has won world titles in the 112 lbs, 122 lbs, and 130 lbs divisions respectively.

Personal Finance Site: Ready To Be Rich

June 28, 2008

Two weeks ago, I came across a website as I was searching for the top blogs in our country: Ready To Be Rich by Fitz Villafuerte (www.fitzvillafuerte.com).  His site tackles about financial literacy in its simplest and coolest form.  Some of his posts were “The Right Business Model”, “How’s Your Budget And Personal Savings?”, and even lite topics like playing a card game known as Magic the Gathering, and the coolest of all I guess is “How To Save Money On Your Next Starbucks Experience”, which many yuppies would be able to relate to.

He also gives tips on how to earn money like this on:

Earn by Selling Your Photos Online

“Are you a photo enthusiast? If yes, then why not try selling your photos online? You don’t need those expensive DSLR cameras, a studio setup or even have formal training on photography to sell your images. All you need is a decent camera, a bit of technical knowledge, a Paypal account and a place where to sell them.” (refer to site for continuation)

Check his site @ www.fitzvillafuerte.com and be financially free!

I.Q. Test

Let’s work your brain.

A black man wearing all black, is walking on a black avenue.  All the houses in that street - lights were off.

There came a black car with its headlights also off.

As the blackman crosses the road, the driver hit the brakes and didn’t hit him.

QUESTION: How did the driver saw the blackman? (more…)

Among Ed files Plunder Charges against Pampanga jueteng lord

June 27, 2008

Earlier, I received an email from the mailing list of ESEF-Phils about the filed plunder charges against Rodolfo “Bong” Pineda, alleged “Jueteng Boss”, by Gov. Ed Panlilio of the province of Pampanga.  It is not new to many that “Bong” Pineda has been the most notorious jueteng lord in their province but still up to this time, he’s still enjoying a luxurious life from his plunders.

In line with this move by Among Ed, an email has been made so that Filipinos, like me, could express their support.  Here it is: wesupportgovpanlilio@gmail.com

Gov. Grace Padaca of Isabela and Mayor Jesse Robredo of Naga City have also express their support for Gov. Ed Panlilio crusade against illegal gambling, which has been proven to be one of the main culprit why families particularly in Pampanga province is suffering from poverty and moral degradation.

(Check out the Open Letter of Gov. Panlilio below)

OPEN LETTER IN SUPPORT OF GOV. EDDIE “AMONG ED” PANLILIO OF PAMPANGA
26 June 2008

HON. EDDIE PANLILIO
Governor
Province of Pampanga

Dear Gov. Panlilio:

Greetings of peace!

We have learned from the news that you have recently filed a Plunder case against Rodolfo “Bong” Pineda for having conspired in pocketing millions of pesos from illegal gambling payoffs particularly operations of “jueteng”. We would like to inform you that we are in full support of your crusade against illegal gambling which is seen as one of the major reasons for the rampant poverty that is pervasive in our country. Illegal gambling does not only destroy the life of the gambler but it also affects every member of his family thus, we believe that this filing of a case against one of the country’s alleged illegal gambling lords is a welcome development towards bringing to justice those that have continued to corrupt our society.

Blogging @ i.ph

June 26, 2008

hmmm…what can I say….  Blogging is not really my thing though I had some posts in my friendster blog, I never took it seriously.  Let me just tell things about myself since I can’t think of any topic as of the moment.  I’m a 23-year old ECE graduate from Manila.  I got my degree from Lyceum of the Philippines University last October 2007 (finally!) hehe!  I was part of the debate team of the school and was very active in various orgs like IECEP, Jesus League, and the Historical Society during my early years there.

Last October 2007, I was elected as a councilman (kagawad) in our barangay, and currently is the youngest in the group.

As of the moment I teach Korean students as part-time teacher/tutor, and is also preparing for my October ECE board exam.

Hopefully, people who would visit my blog, on-purpose/by accident/or by threat (hahaha!), can learn something from my succeeding posts.  This is it for now.  God bless the Philippines!
